WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Taxi drivers in Montgomery County have been nudging the County Council for the past year to help them compete with companies like Uber….and they aren’t done yet.

County taxi drivers complained to the council that cab companies are over-charging them to process credit card transactions.

“Taxicab companies are saying there are other fees associated with it [processing a credit card], there’s equipment and everything else,” says council member Sidney Katz (D-Gaithersburg).

Cab companies shouldn’t be able to claim those “other expenses,” he says.

“There was a time that you had to have a certain type of equipment, but now anybody with a cell phone can process a credit card.”

He says companies should only be allowed to charge drivers the same roughly 1 percent credit-card fee they are charged.

The County Council will hold a public hearing on taxicab credit card transactions Tuesday.
