D.C. Christmas Tree Disposal Begins Today

Twinkling lights, glitter and gourmet menus galore -- without a single dish to wash or tree to trim. Spending Christmas at a hotel does hold a certain allure. Whether you stay for a week or drop in for tea, these properties go to great lengths to offer something special for the holidays.

WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Now that Christmas is over, many D.C. Metro area residents are wondering how to dispose of their Christmas trees.

To assist these residents, the District and surrounding counties have released their tree disposal plans.

Tree collection in D.C. begins today and will last until January 10th, and residents can leave their trees outside for pickup.

Montgomery County will pick up their trees like they would with any other form of recycling.

Eileen Khao, Chief of Montgomery County’s Waste Production and Recycling, says that people can leave their trees outside at any point during the year, and Montgomery County will pick them up.

There is one caveat: the trees must have come from a single family home.

Prince George’s County will also collect Christmas trees on their weekly recycling day.

Prince George’s residents can also bring trees to the Prince George’s County Yard Waste Composting Facility and the Brown Station Road Public Convenience Center.

During the first two weeks in January, Fairfax residents will have to bring their tree to one of several locations in the county.

Erica Carter, Fairfax Couty’s Recycling Coordinator, said that the trees make excellent mulch.

“They’re completely recycleable,” she said. “It’s a great way to get rid of your Christmas tree and make something new.”

Finally, in Arlington, trees will be collected curbside from January 5th to January 16th.

Arlington residents are also encouraged to make an appointment and bring the trees to the Solid Waste Bureau.
