WASHINGTON — (WMAL) There’s still time to send those last-minute Christmas presents; UPS is running full speed. Between Black Friday and New Year’s Eve, they’re expecting to deliver more than 600 million packages.
And between you and your package’s final destination lies a sophisticated network of conveyor belts.
“When a package comes off of a truck and into a facility, it’s put on a conveyer where there are electric eyes that scan the package and put that package’s information into the system,” says UPS spokesman Matthew O’Connor. “The system automatically routes the package to where it needs to go.”
From there, packages continue on the belt and are either put into a UPS delivery truck, or into an air container.
“We actually have a full fleet of aircraft that we use, and we use the Worldport facility, which is in Louisville, Ky,” he said.
Many packages are sorted and distributed from the Worldport facility, “which is the largest facility of its kind in the world.”
The main people touching the package are those bringing it to your doorstep.
“We run our full operation and hire an additional 90,000 to 95,000 additional employees to deliver all of the packages.”
