WASHINGTON (WMAL) — The first Syrian refugee families are scheduled to settle in Texas Monday, setting the stage for more to come.

“If an Islamic terrorist wanted to get in there are many easier ways than going through a two year process of applying for asylum as a refugee,” said Rep. Don Beyer (D-VA).

Beyer says he understands that Americans are afraid, especially on the heels of a terrorist attack in California. But, he says refugees are not likely to be a threat.

“Look at the gun incidents this year. We’re at much greater danger from a disaffected young American white male.”

Americans, and locals, ought to welcome Muslims–old and new, he told WMAL.

“There are bad people, there are evil people of every faith doing terrible things around the world,” he said. “Let’s not pick on this one community.”
