More than 800 Maryland Groups Apply for Medical Marijuana Licenses

Marijuana grows legally inside Oaksterdam University, an institution that trains students interested in a career in the cannabis business. California law currently allows legal use of marijuana for medical purposes. If Proposition 19 passes, it would legalize pot for recreational use.

BALTIMORE — (WMAL) The Maryland Medical Cannabis Commission recieved 882 applications for growers and dispensaries in 2015, about eight times the number of available licenses.

Hannah Byron, Executive Director of the MMCC, said that she “couldn’t be more pleased” the the response to the application process.

Potential medical marijuana growers in Maryland had until November 6 to apply for a license to legally grow and distribute cannabis.

There was at least one application filed in each of Maryland’s 47 senatorial districts and Byron called the response “tremendous.”

“We think we have an incredible pool of applicants that are really going to provide a quality product,” Byron said, “The patients who are desperately waiting for medicine and those that are in chronic pain – it’s been a long time coming, so this is a huge milestone.”

The applications will be examined by an independent evaluation team and 94 candidates will be selected for the next step in the process.

Although the MMCC hasn’t established a set date for when the licenses will be officially issued, Byron said that the overwhelming response to the call for applications shows that Maryland residents want more access to medical marijuana.
