WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Are you in the market for a wedding gown or tuxedo? Why not buy one from the federal government?

The U.S. General Services Administration is selling seized assets from a bridal boutique that was funded with embezzled money.

The GSA will auction off 2,000 designer gowns and wedding apparel on November 18-20 at BWI Airport.

Joan Kornblith, the GSA’s Communications Manager, said that local scam artist Ephonia Green was convicted of embezzling from the Association of American Medical Colleges.

Green stole $5 million from the nonprofit and opened a bridal store in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

According to Kornblith, when a person is caught embezzling from a government organization, their assets are seized by the GSA.

“GSA sells all types of equipment that the government doesn’t have any use for any longer, but this is a rather unusual sale,” Kornblith said.

The dresses will be sold as a steep discount – anywhere from 40% to 60% off.

Profits from the sale will go back to the Association of American Medical Colleges, an organization that represents all the accredited medical schools in the U.S. and Canada.
