WASHINGTON — (WMAL) People in El Salvador are getting some help from Montgomery County.

A delegation of nearly 40 county residents, including County Council President George Leventhal and Maryland State Delegate and Salvadoran-American Ana Sol Gutierrez, will leave for a trip to the country tomorrow to bring a truckload of donated medical supplies and equipment to hospitals and old computers to schools.

County Executive Ike Leggett signed a sister city agreement with the Salvadoran state of Morazán in 2011. The county’s largest immigrant community is from El Salvador with 70,000 residents from the Central American country.

“We all believe that the best way to address migration from Central American is to assist the population in Central America to stabilize and improve quality of life and medical care,” said Leventhal.

Leventhal stressed people going on the four day trip are paying for it themselves.

The county is not footing the bill for any part of the trip.
