WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Montgomery County public schools are setting a new record when it comes to enrollment numbers. Enrollment this year is up, yet again, for the 8th year in a row.

Preliminary figures currently show enrollment at 156,455 students, up more than 2,600 from just a year ago. The numbers are also up 18,700 students compared to 2008 figures.

The increase in enrollment can be predominately attributed to Montgomery County’s middle school and high school numbers. The spike in enrollment for the upper grades accounted for more than 1,600 additional students.

Maryland could top 870,000 new students for the first time in the state’s history, Maryland education officials say.
