WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The search is on for a hit-and-run driver who killed a young Marine along Route 15 in Thurmont shortly after 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night.
Twenty-one-year-old William Ferrell was stopped to help another driver who was having car troubles in the storm.
Maryland State Police Spokesman Greg Shipley said Ferrell was standing outside his truck on the shoulder of the highway when he was hit and killed by what they believe is some sort of heavy duty pickup truck pulling a trailer that hauls vehicles.
“This is a tragic situation amplified by the fact that this was a United States Marine who was assigned to the Naval Support Facility there in Thurmont, a young man who was serving his country and stopped to help a citizen along the side of the road and then was killed in this manner. It’s a tragedy, and we want to find out who’s responsible,” said Shipley.
The driver stopped for a minute just north of the crash and then drove off.
Police say the truck or trailer it was towing likely has damage on its right side.
The northbound lanes of route 15 were closed for hours while police investigated.
Police are asking anyone who saw the the crash to call the Maryland State Police Frederick Barrack at 301-600-4151. Callers may remain anonymous.
