FAIRFAX, VA — (WMAL) Jesse Matthew, the man convicted of sexual assault in Fairfax and accused of raping and murdering two other women, was raped as a child, according to a former girlfirend.

The girlfriend wrote a letter to the judge in his recent sexual assault case, stating that Matthew was sexually abused by multiple people when he was a child and that it may have contributed to other ongoing criminal investigations.

His mother also wrote a letter the judge asking for mercy for her son, saying that he has “shown respect to everyone around him.”

Matthew is accused of raping and killing two college students.

Morgan Harrington was killed in 2009 and Matthew was recently charged in her death.

UVA student Hannah Graham was also abducted and killed in 2014.
