WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The Pope will have lunch with 500 of DC’s homeless following his speech on Capitol Hill, rather than dine with his congressional hosts.

This is all part of Pope Francis’ plan to “spend time with the most vulnerable” while visiting the District.

Catholic Charities will work with St. Maria’s Meals to have 55 tables set up with lunches for the pope and some of the city’s homeless. Pope Francis will bless the food as well as walk among and talk to the poor.

The event was coordinated by Cardinal Donald Wuerl and Monsignor John Enzler, CEO of Catholic Charities

Monsignor Enzler said Pope Francis is an inspiration to Catholics everywhere when it comes to how to treat those ‘most vulnerable’ in society.

The pope’s visit to Catholic Charities will be the last official item on his agenda while visiting the District. Afterwards, he will be depart for his visit to New York City.
