WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Vicki Gardner, the sole survivor of the shooting that saw two reporters shot dead on live TV, is speaking out for the first time since the incident.

In a FOX interview with Greta Van Susteren, Gardner explained what was going through her mind when Vester Lee Flanagan, who reported under the name Bryce Williams, took aim at the TV crew from his former station, WDBJ-7. Reporter Alison Parker and photographer Adam Ward were killed on the scene at Bridgewater Plaza.

Gardner was being interviewed by Parker and Ward when the gunman started firing.

“The only thing I could think was…play dead.’ said Gardner. “I felt as though he was going to shoot me in the head.”

Gardner was shot by Flanagan, but survived.

“You know they say your mind, your world, goes in front of you,” explained Gardner. “And it did real fast….and I said, I’m ready.”

Gardner said she didn’t understand why she survived while the young reporters didn’t, but she planned on serving whatever purpose her survival had.
