WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Over 800,000 people are expected to travel around the D.C. Metro area for Labor Day weekend, according to the latest AAA Mid-Atlantic Gas Watch.

John Townsend, Manager of Public and Government Affairs with AAA Mid-Atlantic said that most of those people would be traveling by car.

“Gas prices have fallen precipitously in the last couple of months and that’s because of the situation with the stock market and what’s going on in China, and also the fact that crude is trading below forty dollars a barrel,” he said.

While the stock market’s instability is a concern for investors, consumers are benefiting at the pump.

Townsend expects the per gallon price of gas to drop to as low as $2.00 by the end of the year.

“Across the nation we’re paying $2.42 per gallon heading into the Labor Day holiday weekend,” Townsend said, “In the Washington metro area, we’re paying a cent less.”

The national average price is $1.00 less than it was this time last year.
