ANNAPOLIS, MD — (WMAL) A burglar in Annapolis stole $1,300 worth of gold and silver teeth fillings from a dentist’s office last week, according to a report by Annapolis Police.
The break-in occurred last Wednesday night but wasn’t reported until Sunday.
Employees immediately noticed that a jar containing $10 was missing from the front desk, but no one realized the teeth were stolen until the dentist needed them days later.
Annapolis Police Department Spokesperson Amy Miguez said that the gold and silver crowns were probably taken because they are precious metals.
“We see thefts of copper, we see thefts of catalytic converters that also contain precious metals,” she said, “So maybe they saw the gold and silver and thought maybe they could get a few bucks.”
Miguez also said it was likely that the teeth thief would try to sell the metals to a pawn shop.
“These dealers have to record who brings them items and they have to record it into a pawn database that the police have access to.”
While the Annapolis Police Department could use pawn shop records to help find the suspect, they are also asking for the public’s help in identifying them.
