BALTIMORE – (WMAL) A new class being offered at the University of Maryland-Baltimore campus plans to examine the causes and potential solutions of last April’s rioting in Baltimore.
“It’ll focus on social, economic and other issues, including policing practices, criminal justice, access to housing, healthcare, education, and so forth,” said school spokesman Alex Likowski. “The School of Law and School of Social Work are primarily focused on this course offering.”
The class will be taught by multiple professors and will make use of a rotating list of guest speakers, Likowski said.
“It’s galvanizing thought. It’s the sort of thing we’d expect our law and social work students to examine and consider,” Likowski said. He hopes it’ll be both a learning experience and a healing experience for the city.
“The University is engaged in many ways with our West Baltimore neighbors, to try to help understand what the city is going through, and to find ways that the University can be involved to help solve some of the problems facing residents,” Likowski said. “It’s a tragedy but it’s also an opportunity educationally for our students.”
