WASHINGTON — (WMAL) D.C. police shot a woman who approached them with a knife on Saturday night.

Fire and EMS units responded to a call about a fire in Northeast D.C.

When they arrived at the 5300 block of Clay Terrace, one of the residents pulled out a knife and approached a police officer.

As firefighters fought flames at a small row house nearby, video footage captured the officer shooting the woman in the shoulder.

The knife-wielding woman is currently at the hospital in serious condition and is charged with multiple felonies, including arson and assault.

Police Chief Cathy Lanier inspected the scene herself after the shooting occurred.

She said that the responding officer was following standard police protocol during the incident, but that the police would need to see a full video of the incident to determine if the officer used excessive force.
