ANNAPOLIS — (WMAL) A Prince George’s County man remains missing after the boat he was on sank in the Chesapeake just north of the Bay Bridge Sunday.
The 17-foot craft was carrying six passengers when it experienced engine trouble and began taking on water before it could get to shore. A spokeswoman with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources says the boat sank within minutes, and that passengers, which included an adult man and four children, ages 5 to 13, did not have time to put on lifejackets before the vessel dipped into the water.
Those five passengers were rescued by another boater, but a 42-year-old man from Upper Marlboro remains missing. Witnesses said they saw the man go under, but did not see him resurface.
The search for him continued until dark Sunday and resumed Monday morning. At this point, DNR officials say the mission is one of recovery, not rescue.
There have been 16 boating deaths in Maryland so far in 2015 – 4 more than for all of 2014.
