ARLINGTON — (WMAL) For the first time, three of Virginia’s tax holidays are being combined into one weekend of savings.
Virginia shoppers can expect huge savings on school supplies, emergency supplies and even home appliances.
Joel Davison, Communications Director with the Virginia Department of Taxation said that from August 7th to August 9th purchases of certain items will be sales tax free.
“Not paying that six percent sales tax can really add up on a lot of items,” he said.
School supplies, including books, binders, pencils and pens under $20 each are sales tax free, as well as clothing items worth less than $100 each.
Emergency supplies like flashlights, tarp and first aid kits under $60 are also sales tax free.
Perhaps one of the biggest deals is on power generators – any generator purchased for less than $1000 is exempt from sales tax as well.
The decision to combine the tax holidays came in January when the General Assembly noticed that that the dates of three separate tax holidays were relatively close to each other.
