Desean Jackson injured his right shoulder on Thursday during a 1-on-1 drill. Head Coach Jay Gruden says the injury is not a direct result of a collision with a blocking sled, as earlier reports implied.
“Sorry to squash the rumor,” an animated Gruden said. “I’m sure nobody will write that. But the fact is [the sled] didn’t cause any injury.”
Jackson will be out 1-2 weeks with a right shoulder sprain.
Gruden also confirmed a minor injury to veteran corner DeAngelo Hall, who left practice early with pain in his groin. He’s listed as day-to-day. Hall’s injury marks the fourth Redskins corner to go down with an injury in just the earliest stages of the pre-season, following Bashaud Breeland, David Amerson and Tevin Mitchell. Mitchell was waved by the ‘Skins on Wednesday after confirming the torn labrum in his left shoulder was a season-ending injury.
Thursday marked the first day of Redskins training camp alongside the Houston Texans. All eyes, including Gruden’s, were on J.J. Watt and match-ups with the Houston defensive line.
“When you’re talking about greatness, and you see how [J.J. Watt] plays, and the effort he gives on a consistent basis, it’s really good for everybody to see,” said Gruden.
Matching up against Watt and the Houston D-Line was a Redskins O-Line coached by newly hired Bill Callahan. Callahan’s been noted early on in training camp for his “cross-training method” which involves moving around members of the offensive line so they have experience at all five positions. Gruden maintains that there are no guaranteed spots on the O-line, and linemen who make the roster will have to prove they are versatile and can move inside-out.
Tomorrow’s afternoon walk-through will be cancelled due to anticipated rain, according to Gruden. Practice will continue, as scheduled, alongside the Texans until Saturday.
