ALEXANDRIA — (WMAL) Fairfax county Public Schools need to cut almost $100 million from their budget, and school sports programs might pay the price.

187,000 students will attend Fairfax public schools this year but funding isn’t keeping up with the increased enrollment.

An unofficial committee of citizens says that cutting high school sports would save the schools $11 million.

They also suggested another $12 million in savings by eliminating yearbooks, school newspapers, and implementing significant reductions to music and drama programs.

Financial issues have plagued the school district in recent years, as per-student costs rise and schools find increased difficulty keeping up with teacher salary demands.
