WASHINGTON — (WMAL)  Spotsylvania County is considering building a baseball stadium for the Hagerstown Suns. But nothing will happen unless the team’s owner sets up a meeting with the Board of Supervisors about the latest proposal. Hagerstown Suns owner Bruce Quinn has until Friday to do so.

“If we hear back then at that point I’ll look and see what it is, and then I’ll decide whether or not it’s be the best thing to do for the county and my constituents,” says County Supervisor Ann Heidig, who is the swing vote for the proposed stadium. Heidig told WMAL she does not support the team’s last offer and that she is waiting to hear back from the team on a new proposal. As of now, she’s still on the fence.

“On the one side the taxpayers are concerned that they may get stuck paying a bill for a stadium,” Heidig said. But, on the other side the stadium has the potential to boost to the local economy.

“Will it be a white elephant, or will it turn into an economic engine?” The question is riling up many of her constituents. She says people in her church are even approaching her about it.

“Several people from my church have said they’re not in favor of it,” but, Heidig says, only those with strong opinions about the issue tend to be more vocal.

“When we have public hearings, generally the people that are opposed to something or strongly in favor of something are the ones that show up.”
