ARLINGTON — (WMAL) It just got easier to bike from Arlington to Alexandria.
On Tuesday night, the Arlington County Board approved a new Capital Bikeshare project that would install eight bike stations along the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
The Board voted unanimously to accept federal money to build the bike stations, which will be located at major travel and tourist spots like Ronald Reagan National Airport and Arlington National Cemetery.
Arlington County Board Chair Mary Hynes said that construction would be complete within the year, though she didn’t have an exact timetable.
Hynes, like the rest of the board is enthusiastic about the benefits of the Bikeshare program.
“This is something we’ve worked toward for a very long time, to allow folks who use the trails between Arlington and Alexandria access to this program, and people who visit monuments and other things along the way to have the ability to do so on bicycles.”
There are more than 300 bike stations and 3,000 bikes in the District and surrounding areas.
Arlington Transportation Director Dennis Leach said that the GW Parkway project would be complete in summer 2016.
