5am – A/B/C             Arlington will not be getting a new gun shop. (Washington Post) — Some residents of Arlington — a decidedly blue county in purple Virginia — were not happy after learning in May that a gun shop was to open in a strip mall in close proximity to schools. They created an online petition, flooded neighborhood e-mail lists with concerns and threatened to boycott nearby businesses if the store opened. Politics aside, local officials said that if the business complies with zoning laws, there was little they could do. It looked like a gun shop would be moving in. But on Monday, the owner of the property at 2105 N. Pollard St. along Lee Highway said he backed out of a lease and Nova Firearms would not occupy the storefront. “Absolutely, there is going to be no gun store. I did what I had to do to back out,” said Kostas Kapasouris, the owner of the property. “This was my decision and only my decision.” He wouldn’t elaborate on the terms of the severed lease.

5am – D         2016 News:

  • Walker leads Trump in new Iowa poll. A Monmouth University poll taken July 16-19 put Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker strongly in the lead with the support of 22%. Trump fared the next best, trailing Walker by 9 points, according to a news release Monday.
  • Poll: Trump surges to big lead in GOP presidential race. According to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. there was a drop in support on the final night of the survey, Trump was the favorite of 24 percent of registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who announced his candidacy a week ago, is in second place, at 13 percent, followed by former Florida governor Jeb Bush, at 12 percent. Walker’s support is strongest among those who describe themselves as “very conservative.”
  • KASICH TO JUMP INTO PRESIDENTIAL RACE: John Kasich of Ohio is announcing his candidacy on Tuesday for the Republican presidential nomination. Known as a fiscal conservative during his nine terms in Congress, Mr. Kasich has recently taken more centrist positions, defending spending on social programs and noting his willingness to work with Democrats on immigration.

5am – E         ‘Drunk’ squirrel causes $400 damage to British bar. (RNN) – A British beer burglar has gotten away with a lot of squirrelly activity – literally. According to a BBC report, glasses, bottles and spilt beer covered the floor of the Honeybourne Railway Club in Hereford and Worcester after an intruder made its way into the bar, turned on a beer tap and helped itself to some free booze. The pint thief turned out to be pint-sized when a squirrel stuck its head out from behind some “crisps” (the British term for potato chips). Sam Boulter, the club’s secretary, observed the animal stumbling around after getting into the ale. “I’ve never seen a drunk squirrel before,” Boulter told the BBC. “He was sozzled and looked a bit worse for wear, shall we say.” Like many other bar patrons who cause a scene, the randy rodent was tossed from the premises through a window after being captured in a trash bin.

6am – A/B/C The owner of a diner in Maine is defending her actions for yelling at a young child for crying in her restaurant for over 40 minutes because it got the girl to be quiet. Do you have a problem with what the owner did?

6am – D         Hackers could expose millions of cheating spouses on the Ashley Madison dating site. Ashley Madison, a dating website targeting married people, was breached by hackers, exposing the information of millions of its customers, site owner Avid Life Media confirmed. In a statement released Monday on the Ashley Madison site, Avid Life Media says they were flagged on an unauthorized attempt to gain access to their systems. The company says sites have since been secured. “We are working with law enforcement agencies, which are investigating this criminal act,” says the company in a statement. “Any and all parties responsible for this act of cyber–terrorism will be held responsible.”

6am – E         Rockville debates removal of Confederate soldier statue. (Fox 5) — ROCKVILLE, Md. -A statue of a Confederate soldier that stands outside the Red Brick Courthouse in Rockville was the subject of a packed meeting Monday night as residents and city officials debated whether to keep it where it is or to remove it. Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett initially said he wanted public input on the statue. But last week, he ordered the statue removed before this public hearing took place. This bronze statue of the Confederate soldier has stood tall in Rockville for 102 years. But should it stay or should it go? The public, historians and the city council sounded off their thoughts at the meeting. “Give it back to the people who gave it to us,” said one resident who commented at the meeting. “It was a gift. Not all gifts are forever. Give it back to them and let them put it up in their front lawn.” “If the statue is uprooted from its place, what other symbols of our history and/or slavery might follow?” a historian said.

7am – A         INTERVIEW — CAROLINE GLICK – Senior Contributing Editor, The Jerusalem Post and author of The Israeli Solution

  • U.N. Moves to Lift Iran Sanctions After Nuclear Deal, Setting Up a Clash in Congress. The United Nations Security Council on Monday unanimously approved a resolution that creates the basis for international economic sanctions against Iran to be lifted, a move that incited a furious reaction in Israel and potentially sets up an angry showdown in Congress.
  • Ash Carter in Tel Aviv to ease Israeli minds. U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter was warmly welcomed by his Israeli counterpart Monday on the first Cabinet-level U.S. visit to the Jewish state since the Iran nuclear deal was announced. The Pentagon chief met at Israel’s defense headquarters with Defense Minister Moshe Yaalon and on Tuesday is to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has strongly criticized the Iran deal.

7am – B        Entertainment News:

  • Kevin Bacon’s epic charity tour of Washington (and, yeah, he played ‘Footloose’). Actor-rocker Kevin Bacon seemed to be on a mission this weekend to reduce the entire Washington region’s degrees of Bacon. (Usually, only actors and actresses have Bacon scores, according to the popular pop-culture game “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon,” but we’re pretty sure an in-person interaction with the “Footloose” star gets you honorary status.) In addition to his gig at the Birchmere with his band, the Bacon Brothers, the peripatetic double threat and his brother/bandmate Michael Bacon, kept popping up on charitable missions. On Saturday, they played the “Footloose” theme at Old Town’s Sugar Shack, after the coffee shop posted on social media about their offer of a free doughnut to anyone who sang “the only song everybody can cut loose to.” (The flavor? Maple bacon, of course — and Sugar Shack donated the proceeds of any sales of the pastry.)
  • Daniel Radcliffe Rap Eminem’s ‘The Real Slim Shady.’ Actor tackles 2000 classic at California Irish pub, with girlfriend Erin Darke as hypewoman. Daniel Radcliffe: actor, wizard, rapper. The Harry Potter star delivered a dexterous version of Emimem’s “The Real Slim Shady” during a recent karaoke night at Cameron’s Irish Pub in Half Moon Bay, California. Luckily, an audience member filmed the performance and uploaded the results in the above YouTube clip.

7am – C        17 years later, man receives $2,500 fine from Maryland. (WJLA) — If you owe the state of Maryland money, chances are you’ll soon find out. The state’s ability to track people down is improving. “I thought it was unacceptable to put it nicely,” stated Connecticut resident John Carroll. Way back in the 1990s, Carroll lived in Maryland and would cruise the highways in his 1986 Audi. But he just learned Maryland has no record of that car being insured for a 10-month period starting in 1998. The result, a $2,500 fine. “I’ve always been covered,” affirmed Carroll. Carroll says he’s lived in his current Connecticut home since leaving Maryland in 1998. He believes during that move his insurance didn’t properly transfer. “It’s not like they couldn’t find me a couple years ago,” said Carroll. After 17 years, he said he has switched insurance companies and no longer has the records to prove he had coverage the whole time. “That was four cars ago. It’s basically impossible for me to prove that,” stated Carroll. 7 On Your Side reached out to Maryland’s Central Collection Unit- which sent the letter to inform Carroll. The agency couldn’t talk about this case. But its director said debt notices are typically sent out yearly. He admitted the agency has had trouble locating people who move out of state. But with new technologies, it’s getting easier and more debt notices like Carroll’s are being sent to people who leave Maryland and owe money. “I don’t like to owe anyone anything. It’s just too hard for me to prove and would be too time consuming and I don’t have time for that. I’m just going to ignore it,” concluded Carroll.

  • Nationals get to Matt Harvey early, top Mets 7-2 to open ‘big’ series. WASHINGTON (AP) – Clint Robinson’s two-run double to deep center was the biggest blow as the Nationals jumped on Mets starter Matt Harvey for five runs in the first three innings Monday night, and NL East-leading Washington beat second-place New York 7-2. A day after leaving 25 men on base and going 1 for 26 with runners in scoring position in an 18-inning victory at St. Louis, the Mets’ troubled offense left 10 men on and went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position.

Becky Hammon, who last year became the first woman ever to become an assistant coach, was named by the San Antonio Spurs as head coach for their summer league team. She’s coached five games so far, and won four of them. But even more than victories, what she’s earning is respect. As Becky Hammon paces the sideline, she is fully in charge.
