WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Anticipated revenue shortfalls in Montgomery County — along with a recent Supreme Court ruling forcing the county to give hefty tax refunds — means even more budget cuts for county schools.

The county executive wants to trim $10 million from the school district.

“Making additional savings is going to be tough,” said Patricia O’Neill, president of the county Board of Education.

O’Neill said the school district already made a $10 million reduction in February and a $53 million cut in June.

Superintendent Larry Bowers added that it’s difficult to keep cuts from impacting the classroom.

“We’re a people business; 90 percent of our budget is personnel,” Bowers told WMAL. “We’re really going to look at all of our central services and our central office functions.”
