RICHMOND — Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell will not receive a retrial after his corruption conviction last year.

He is currently sentenced to two years in prison for accepting over $140,000 in gifts from pharmaceutical company Star Scientific.

The appellate court said McDonnell failed to sustain his “heavy burden” of proof required for his appeal, failing to show that the government’s evidence against him was inadequate.

The court ruled that McDonnell “received a fair trial and was duly convicted by a jury of his fellow Virginians. We have no cause to undo what has been done.”
