WASHINGTON (WMAL) — We’re wrapping up a weekend of record travel on the roads, and that’s expected to continue the rest of the summer.

Whether you headed to the beach or just around town last weekend, chances are you noticed gas prices are lower now than they were at this time the last few summers.

John Townsend, spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic, said summer gas prices are the lowest in five years, and he expects prices to continue to fall to $2.50 by Labor Day.

But they’ve got a ways to go — the national average for a gallon of regular currently is $2.77. In the D.C. metro area, the average is around $2.76.

Although the gas prices are the highest of 2015, they’re still 94 cents cheaper per gallon than they were a year ago.
