WASHINGTON (WMAL) — Maryland transportation is about to get a face-lift, and it could help out commuters.
In a recent interview, former Maryland Transportation Secretary David Winstead said the expected improvements to the roads around the District and Baltimore would greatly improve daily commutes.
“These improvements will facilitate movements which will overall help economic development in Montgomery County,” he said.
Recently, Governor Larry Hogan announced the future construction of the Purple Line rail system, along with other improvements to highways in the surrounding areas.
Winstead said that most people are pleased with the Purple Line’s approval and that traffic control innovations could increase the capacity of the roads by 20 percent if done properly.
He also wants gas taxes and titling fees to help fund the improvements.
“The payoff is really addressing a major quality of life challenge in this region,” he said. “It’s not just suburban Maryland and Washington metro area; it’s Baltimore.”
