WASHINGTON – Police Chief Cathy Lanier said her department is taking possible Fourth of July terrorist attacks into account as it prepares for the busy holiday.
Earlier this week, the Department of Homeland Security and the FBI warned police departments across the country that terrorists may target Fourth of July celebrations.
Still, the memo said there are no specific or credible threats.
Lanier said her department will be fully deployed Saturday just like it is every Independence Day.
“We operate here in Washington D.C. that there’s an elevated threat level at all times. We never lower our threat level in terms of our posture,” Lanier said.
She said Thursday’s response to a possible shooting at the Navy Yard shows that D.C. is very well prepared to respond to emergencies.
Speaking to reporters after yesterday’s false alarm at the Navy Yard Bowser said, “When we talk to our residents and visitors who want to celebrate Independence Day in the District of Columbia, it should be very clear to everybody that we take clear and credible threats or calls from our citizens or employees very very seriously.”
She said the city’s 4,000 officers and federal partners are prepared to respond to any emergency.
