KUWAIT CITY, KUWAIT — (CNN) At least 25 people have been killed and 202 wounded in the bombing Friday of a Shiite-affiliated mosque in Kuwait’s capital, Kuwait City, according to the official Kuwaiti news agency, citing the Interior Ministry.
While the statement refers only to an “explosion” without specifying details, ISIS has claimed responsibility and claims it was a suicide attack.
An apparent bomb blast tore through a mosque in Kuwait’s capital during Friday prayers, killing 25 people and injuring more than 200 worshippers, state media reported.
ISIS claimed responsibility for what it called a suicide bombing at the Shiite-affiliated Al-Sadiq mosque. The group put the number of dead and injured in the dozens.
Cell phone video posted to social media and apparently shot at the mosque showed worshippers walking and stumbling through a dust- and rubble-filled interior, many with their white robes splattered in what appeared to be blood.
Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah toured the damaged mosque ahead of emergency Cabinet and parliamentary meetings, the Kuwait News Agency reported.
The country’s Justice and Islamic Affairs minister, Yaqoub Al-Sanea, called the attack “a terrorist and criminal act that threatens our security and targets our national unity,” the news agency said.
It comes amid deadly terror attacks in Tunisia and France.
According to authorities, at least 27 people died in an attack on a seaside hotel in Tunisia, while in France an attacker crashed a car into a building housing an American-owned company and left a body with a severed head and a message.
