WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Congressman Chris Van Hollen says he’s been pressing OPM daily for answers about the recent data breaches, but not getting very far.

“I’ve now written two letters,” Van Hollen said. “The first letter expresses frustration at the fact that federal employees and others could not get answers from OPM about the scope of the data breach and action OPM was taking. The second letter was that we learned the scope of the problem was much larger than OM had indicated, and it asks for immediate answers.”

He says when they were asked questions at a House hearing earlier this week, they gave vague answers.

“One of the huge frustrations here is it’s been difficult to get information out of OPM…it was clear the answers were inadequate,” he said.

He says there are two needs that federal workers have from OPM that he’d like to see addressed as soon as possible.

“Let’s address the immediate issue, find out the scope of damage, make sure that people are held accountable. Then let’s focus a lot more effort on fixing the system.”

In the meantime, he says he’s happy to be a conduit for anyone else with questions for OPM.

“Just know that everyone should recognize, we’re also having difficulty getting answers out of OPM.”
