WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Another local rite of summer comes to pass tonight – the 54th Annual Roll Call Congressional Baseball game at Nationals Park.
Stakes are high as Republicans strive to regain victory over the Democrats, who have a six-game winning streak going – quite possibly because they have Lousiana Congressman Cedric Richmond on their side. Richmond has been the game’s winning pitcher the past four years, and he’s also a demon at the plate,
Richmond is coming off should surgery, however, and while he plans to play, he doesn’t know how effective his curveball will be.
The Republican’s strongest weapon also hails from Louisiana. Congressman Steve Scalise stole four bases in last year’s game.
The game is played by members of Congress, but the 2016 Presidential sweepstakes will also be represented, because Senator Rand Paul (R-KY) will be on the field. Christina Bellantoni, Editor-in-Chief for Roll Call, tells WMAL, “He’s also the first presidential candidate at least in modern history to still play in this game while running for president.”
The game is open to the public. Gates open at 5:30 pm and the first pitch is at 7:00 pm. Tickets are 10 dollars and all proceeds benefit the Washington Literacy Center, the Washington Nationals Dream Foundation and the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Washington.
Details on how to purchase tickets can be found on www.rollcall.com.
