FAIRFAX, VA — (WMAL) As sprawl eats up more of the countryside, the countryside’s residents are themselves becoming suburbanites.
There are, of course, the usual suspects of suburban living.
“The ever-present white-tailed deer population, Canada geese, red fox, as well as raccoons and groundhogs,” says Fairfax County Wildlife Management Specialist Katherine Edwards.
But as we keep encroaching on their habitats, we’re seeing other animals hold their ground.
“We are having increased sightings of coyotes in Fairfax County, this is something that is not a cause for alarm,” Edwards says. They are not a known danger to people or pets, but she says they are tracking the population. There have already been several black bear sightings across the region this spring. Such sightings that were once rarities are now becoming commonplace.
Edwards recommends never approaching these animals, as their behavior can be unpredictable.
And, they’re resourceful with what’s left for them.
“Make sure to secure your garbage, either securing it indoors, in your garage, or if you have an animal-proof container, use that,” Edwards says. She also recommends feeding pets indoors and making sure to clean off your grill thoroughly after your summer cookouts.
