ALEXANDRIA (WMAL) — Alexandria’s incumbent mayor Bill Euille lost his re-election bid to Vice Mayor Allison Silberberg in Tuesday’s Democractic primary elections.

Euille lost with 4,732 votes while Silberberg received 5,044. Former Mayor Kerry Donley earned 3,660 votes.

No Republican candidate was chosen to run in November’s mayoral election.

Silberberg says she wants to focus on cutting the city’s spending and increasing the commercial tax base.

Virginia’s House Speaker William J. Howell won re-election in the Republican primary, defeating Susan Stimpson.

Howell won 62 percent to 38 percent of the vote.
