WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Come back Thursday and try again.
The National Park Service says the Washington Monument will remain closed for at least two more days after its latest power failure.
The monument, which was shut down for much of Thursday and Friday last week, was closed again Monday after the elevator lost power around 9:30 p.m. Sunday.
Park Service spokesman Mike Litterst told WMAL the monument will remain closed until at least Thursday, as technicians repair a mechanical alignment issue with the elevator. Officials believe the issue may have developed as a result of the repeated shutting down of the elevator last week.
“I can’t believe they’re not trying to maintain it. I thought the entire infrastructure was new, but I’m having my staff look into seeing what is the cause,” DC Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton told WMAL. “If you’re going to have an elevator break down in the Monument, try doing it in December or even January, but don’t do it to us in May or June,” she added.
