Arlington, Texas Teen Killed in Kayaking Accident

DALLAS (CNN) — Twitter is buzzing with words of remembrance for 17-year-old John Cookson. The Lamar High School junior died Wednesday when his kayak flipped on Village Creek in Arlington, Texas.

“Words can’t describe how devastated I am,” one friend tweeted. “You were one of my best friends. I love you & I’ll never forget you.”

Another friend wrote, “OMG I still can’t believe it. Heaven just gained a new angel.”

“It’s been a very sad day at Lamar for all of our students and staff. We’ve had grief counselors on campus all day to assist any student and staff who wanted to speak to them,” said Leslie Johnston, Director of Communications for Arlington ISD.

Folks at the district say they are planning a memorial or a vigil in the next few days.

“He was a varsity tennis player and he was in the symphony orchestra. So he was very involved on campus,” Johnston said.

He also had a job working for the Texas Rangers. The team tweeted its condolences and remembered John during Thursday night’s game.

Lamar High School students will wear orange in honor of John.

“It’s a tragic situation,” Johnston said. “But they are dealing with that and moving forward and working through that grief with their students and helping with that loss.”
