STERLING, VA — One man suffered minor injuries during an apparent rock explosion in Sterling Thursday morning.  A  Loudoun County fire spokeswoman told WMAL a large rock struck a house near Old Ox Road. The victim who was struck inside the house was transported to a local hospital.

It appears there was more than one rock flying.  An eyewitness tells WMAL News he also saw a rock fall from the sky on Oakgrove Road, near a Dunkin Donuts.

“A rock about the size of a basketball hit on the road in front of me and exploded, and part of it hit a ‘No Parking’ sign in front of me on the right side of the road, and then took out the windows and busted up a bunch of cars,” said Bob Ryan, who also added that several pieces also fell outside of a nearby strip mall.

Ryan guessed the rocks may have been some sort of meteor strike, but fire investigators are looking into the possibility that the rock came from the Loudoun Quarry, which is less than a mile away.
