5am – A/B/C NFL suspends Tom Brady, hammers Patriots for Deflategate. (USA Today) — The NFL suspended New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for the first four games of the 2015 season Monday as part of sweeping punishment against the organization for its actions in the so-called Deflategate scandal. The league also fined the Patriots $1 million and docked them two draft picks — a first-rounder in 2016 and a fourth-rounder in 2017 — for violating the playing rules “and the failure to cooperate in the subsequent investigation” co-led by attorney Ted Wells. Brady was suspended “for conduct detrimental to the integrity of the NFL” after a 243-page report released last week by Wells found it more probable than not that Brady “was at least generally aware of the inappropriate activities” by two low-level team employees that led to the Patriots using underinflated footballs in the AFC Championship Game. Those employees, John Jastremski and James McNally, were suspended indefinitely without pay by Patriots owner Robert Kraft effective Wednesday, the league said, adding the pair cannot be reinstated without approval by NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent.

5am – D         White House rejects Seymour Hersh ‘baseless assertions’ on bin Laden raid. Washington (CNN) The White House is dismissing as “baseless” a controversial report alleging President Barack Obama’s administration lied about the circumstances surrounding the 2011 killing of Osama bin Laden. “There are too many inaccuracies and baseless assertions in this piece to fact check each one,” White House National Security spokesman Ned Price said in a statement to reporters. He took aim specifically at journalist Seymour Hersh’s assertion that the administration collaborated with Pakistani officials to kill the al Qaeda leader, saying that “the notion that the operation that killed Usama Bin Ladin was anything but a unilateral U.S. mission is patently false.”

5am – E         Metro Center Reopens After Power Outage, Smoke in Tunnel. (NBC Washington) — Metro Center on the Red Line reopened Tuesday morning after a power outage and smoke in the tunnel closed the station for several hours. The closure happened just as the Washington Wizards playoff game ended, giving basketball fans a taste of what morning and evening commuters put up with Monday. Delays were reported all day Monday. But the Monday afternoon delays were nothing like the morning event, when commuters packed onto crowded Metro platforms, spilled onto street corners and jammed into shuttle buses as they struggled to get from Northern Virginia into D.C. after smoke was spotted in a tunnel.

6am – A/B/C Jeb Bush Says He Would Not Repeal Obama Immigration Order Right Away. Jeb Bush said in an interview that he would not immediately move to repeal President Obama’s executive order on immigration — suggesting he would instead wait for a new law to be passed addressing the matter.  In an interview with Megyn Kelly that is to be shown Monday night on Fox News, Mr. Bush said that rather than overturning the order, he believed in “passing meaningful reform of immigration and make it part of it.” The president’s executive order seeks to shield millions of undocumented immigrants from deportation.

6am – D         Mark Halperin Apologizes for Ted Cruz Interview. In case you hadn’t heard, Bloomberg Politics’ Mark Halperin has been getting a lot of Internet flak for a Ted Cruz interview gone terribly wrong, in which the co-managing editor seemingly tests Cruz on his Cuban-ness. Toward the end of the interview, Halperin began a line of questions that got super uncomfortable, and some even called “racist.” “I wanna talk a little bit more about your Cuban heritage,” said Halperin. “And ask you in the following categories whether you have an affinity for or a connection to anything part of your Cuban past. You got a favorite Cuban food? A favorite Cuban dish?” Cruz appropriately responded “picadillo, I grew up eating all the time.”

6am – E         Royal snub? Gulf rulers to skip Obama’s Middle East summit. The White House was scrambling Monday to put a positive face on an upcoming summit of Persian Gulf states after learning leaders from four of the six invited nations are expected to skip. While those nations are still sending representatives to the summit being hosted by President Obama later this week at Camp David, the absence of crucial heads of state — notably, Saudi Arabia’s new king — could present an awkward situation for the administration. But State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf rejected the notion this was a “snub,” and White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest likewise said the administration is “confident” that Saudi Arabia and other nations will be “ably represented” at the summit. Earnest confirmed Monday that Saudi King Salman would no longer attend, noting the king originally had accepted the invitation. But Earnest stressed that Saudi Arabia did not express any concerns to the U.S. before or after the Saudi king’s change in travel plans. Deputy national security adviser Ben Rhodes said Monday afternoon Obama and the King had spoken earlier in the day. He added they also had spoken recently and would continue their dialogue despite the King opting out of the summit. Earnest said the feedback the U.S. has had from Saudi Arabia has been “positive,” and as for speculation that Riyadh might have been trying to send a message to the Obama administration with the change, Earnest said: “If so, that message is not received.”  Saudi Arabia cited the situation in Yemen for the change.

7am – A         INTERVIEW — BRANDON PAULIN – new mayor of INDIAN HEAD, MARYLAND and the youngest mayor in Maryland history

  • Youngest Mayor in Maryland History Elected in Charles County. Brandon Paulin is a 19-year-old college student. Next week, Maryland officials will swear in the youngest mayor ever in the state: a 19-year-old college student. Brandon Paulin won Tuesday’s mayoral election in the town of Indian Head with 239 of the 383 votes cast. He’s a student at the College of Southern Maryland. Paulin and the two other members of the town council will be sworn in next Tuesday.

7am – B         Entertainment News:

  • ‘American Idol’ Will End Its Run in 2016. (NY Times) — At its height, “American Idol” minted breakout stars and drew more than 30 million viewers an episode. It was the No. 1 broadcast show for eight years, provided a boon to an ailing music industry and was the sort of appointment television that industry executives are desperately trying to recreate. That was then. The show has aged and the singing competition genre has faded. In recent years the “Idol” audience has eroded at an alarming rate, with losses in total viewership in eight of the last nine seasons. This season, it is drawing under nine million viewers, its fewest ever. Its demise seemed inevitable, and on Monday it finally came. Fox announced that it would shut down “Idol,” one of the most popular and dominant reality shows, after its 15th season concludes next year.
  • ‘College Dropout’ to Ph.D.: Kanye West receives honorary doctorate in Chicago. (LA Times) — Kanye West remained still for 90 minutes on Monday. It was remarkable feat of willpower, a once-in-a-lifetime performance, certainly some kind of record. West — aka Yeezy, aka Ye, aka the Louis Vuitton Don, aka, fashion designer, filmmaker, wannabe architect, reluctant reality TV participant, stage crasher, president basher, instigator, headline maker, Chicagoan and ball of energy — stood patiently at the Auditorium Theatre for more than 30 minutes as 900 graduating students of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago filed slowly into their seats for commencement. In the weeks before commencement, loud contingent of students and alumni made it clear they did not want him at graduation. But Monday, at the ceremony, the reaction to West was positive, even grateful: Rob Bondgren, dean of continuing studies, said “As an alum myself, I thought that if art students don’t understand why he is worthy of being recognized, then they’re not getting the degree I got.” Dave Pauldine, of Elmhurst, whose daughter was graduating, said the school had sent thoughtful letters to parents explaining the decision to honor West, “and I think they made a thoughtful, smart case for him as an artist. I think it was some of the kids who seemed more surprised by this than the parents, to be honest.”

7am – C         Mediterranean Diet with Olive Oil, Nuts Linked to Healthier Brain. Such a diet might help improve memory in older adults, a Spanish study suggests, though the results aren’t definitive. (Reuters Health) – A Mediterranean diet with extra nuts and olive oil might help improve memory in older adults, a Spanish study suggests, though the results aren’t definitive and more research is needed. “This small study found that a Mediterranean diet, which is low in animal foods like meat and butter, and high in vegetables, legumes and whole grains, when supplemented with olive oil or nuts is associated with improved cognitive function,” Samantha Heller, a nutritionist at New York University’s Center for Musculoskeletal Care and Sports Performance who wasn’t involved in the study, said by email. While previous research has linked a Mediterranean diet to a reduced risk of heart disease and some cancers, as well as lower odds of developing Alzheimer’s disease, scientists haven’t conclusively proven that the diet itself is responsible, rather than other lifestyle choices made by people who eat this way.

7am – D/E     NFL suspends Tom Brady, hammers Patriots for Deflategate. (USA Today) — The NFL suspended New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady for the first four games of the 2015 season Monday as part of sweeping punishment against the organization for its actions in the so-called Deflategate scandal.

  • Rulers of most Gulf nations to miss US summit, administration denies ‘snub’

8am – B         George Zimmerman was slightly injured when his truck was shot at today. (USA Today) – George Zimmerman, who won a controversial acquittal in the 2012 shooting death of Trayvon Martin, was slightly injured Monday when he was shot at while driving his pickup truck in Central Florida, authorities said. The incident appeared to involve a man with whom Zimmerman had a previous road rage encounter, Matthew Apperson, police said. Zimmerman, 31, was not struck by a bullet but was hit in the face by flying glass and debris, said his lawyer, Don West. He was treated for minor injuries and released from Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford following the incident in Lake Mary, Fla. West said Zimmerman did not draw his weapon and was trying to get away when a shot was fired.

8am – C         D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser Saying “Redskins” Again. (NBC Washington) — D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser is changing her tune in an effort to bring the Washington Redskins back to Washington. Last year as a D.C. Council member, Bowser signed a council resolution calling for the team to change its name, which some people consider a racial slur. In the past, she said a name change should be part of any talks about bringing the team back to D.C. But the mayor recently started using the name in TV and radio interviews. “We know the perfect location for the Redskins is where they played for decades very successfully,” Bowser said. Bowser is not disputing reports that she’s talking with the team about moving back to Washington.
