WASHINGTON (AP) — Officials are identifying a 61-year-old Virginia woman who died after Washington's subway system had an electrical malfunction that caused a train to fill with smoke.
Chief Medical Examiner spokeswoman Beverly Fields confirmed Tuesday the woman is Carol Glover. She was from Alexandria, Virginia.
Her death was the first fatality on Washington's Metro system since a 2009 crash killed nine people.
The malfunction happened Monday near L'Enfant Plaza, one of the subway's busiest stations. National Transportation Safety Board investigator Michael Flanigon said the smoke started when something came into contact with the high-voltage third rail and caused an electrical arc. A nearby train stopped and smoke spread inside. The cause of the smoke was not yet known.
