Australian Police Arrest Two in Anti-Terrorism Raid

(SYDNEY) — Two men accused of plotting acts of terror have been arrested in Australia a little more than a week after the deadly Sydney hostage siege.

Authorities say the raids were part of an ongoing investigation into a group accused of plotting attacks against random members of the public back in September.

In a news conference on Wednesday, Australian Federal Police Deputy Commissioner Michael Phelan said one of the suspects was charged with possessing documents designed to facilitate an attack.

“There was enough there that gave concern to us that something was being planned. And that’s why a person was charged, who was charged in relation to having a document that was designed to clearly facilitate an attack,” he said.

Phelan said the documents contained information about potential government targets.

It was on the morning of December 15 that Man Haron Monis took control of the Lindt Chocolat Café in Sydney’s Martin Place business district, leading to a 16-hour standoff. Monis and two others — hostages identified as Tori Johnson and Katrina Dawson — were killed during the siege. Of the 17 total hostages, at least 12 were reportedly able to flee from the store before police stormed the shop.
