WASHINGTON — Angry –  but apparently peaceful – protesters gathered in downtown Washington Wednesday evening, marching up Connecticut Avenue, NW, from K Street to Dupont Circle, where they rallied amid heavy police presence to protest the decision of a Staten Island, New York grand jury hours earlier not to indict a police officer in the death of a man who had died in July.

In that case, New York City Police Officer Daniel Pantaleo had been seen on video putting Eric Garner in an apparently fatal choke hold, according to city officials and lawyers for Garner's family.

This grand jury decision comes 10 days after a Ferguson, Missouri grand jury announced that it would not indict Darren Wilson, a white police officer, for fatally shooting Michael Brown, a black unarmed teen. That decision led to violent and destructive protests.

The New York City case brought out protesters in several cities, including Washington, which had already seen protests over several days following the riots in Ferguson.  On Wednesday evening, about 200 people were seen gathered at Dupont Circle, as police closed off streets and followed the crowd.  Traffic was jammed, creating a mass of honking horns amid chants and shouting from the protesters.
