HAPPENING NOW: Sinkhole Swallows Southbound George Washington Parkway In Arlington

ARLINGTON — A 30-foot sinkhole has swallowed up the southbound George Washington Parkway, and forced its closure between Route 123 and Spout Run Parkway, according to US Park Police.

Officials are assessing the damage and trying to determine how long it will take to reopen the parkway, but it's expected to remain closed at least through the morning.  The washout damage to the road is estimated to be 25 to 30 feet wide, and 30 feet long.

Southbound parkway traffic is being diverted onto Route 123,  while the ramp from Route 123 onto southbound George Washington Parkway will stay closed until further notice, according to police.

The George Washington Parkway is open southbound just south of Spout Run. All northbound lanes are currently open.
